The plugin is a straightforward fan-control widget for T2 MacBooks. It installs a root-owned helper and a narrowly scoped Polkit rule that only allows passwordless execution of that helper with three fixed profiles. The code is clear, non-obfuscated, and matches the documented behavior.

  • Requires root-level setup and installs a Polkit rule granting passwordless execution of a helper that writes to /etc/t2fand.conf and restarts a system service, but the helper is restricted to three fixed profiles and the rule is scoped to that exact program.
  • The helper writes to a system configuration file and restarts t2fanrd, which could affect system cooling behavior, but this is the intended functionality and requires explicit user action to install.
How this check works

This review combines the deterministic scan (the rule-based results above) with an independent look at the plugin's code by a language model. The model reads a trimmed sample of the repository's files, the manifest, and the README, then gives a plain-language risk level and a recommendation: install (no notable danger), review (look closer first), or avoid (clearly dangerous).

It runs on the same analyzed commit as the deterministic scan and is strictly advisory — it is not a security guarantee and never blocks a plugin by itself. A human moderator still reviews plugins before they are listed.

Install
$ omarchy plugin add https://github.com/benekuehn/omarchy.mac-fans --enable
Hardware #bar

MacBook Fans for Omarchy

MacBook Fans popover

An Omarchy bar widget for controlling t2fanrd on Intel MacBooks with Apple's T2 chip. It displays both fan RPMs and offers three profiles:

  • Automatic — 55–75°C linear curve.
  • Balanced — quiet, proactive cooling with a 35–75°C linear curve.
  • Full speed — both fans at maximum speed.

Requirements

  • Omarchy with its shell running.
  • An Intel T2 MacBook with one or more Apple SMC fans.
  • t2fanrd installed and enabled (systemctl status t2fanrd).

This does not support pre-T2 Intel Macs or Apple Silicon Macs. It detects the Apple SMC fan files at runtime and writes the matching FanN entries in /etc/t2fand.conf.

Install

omarchy plugin add https://github.com/benekuehn/omarchy.mac-fans.git --enable
sudo ~/.config/omarchy/plugins/benekuehn.macbook-fans/setup-system

Choose the right bar section when prompted. The one-time setup installs a root-owned helper and a narrowly scoped Polkit rule; profile changes thereafter need no password. They write the fixed profile to /etc/t2fand.conf and restart t2fanrd.

Security

Omarchy plugins run inside the long-lived shell process. Review a plugin before installing it. The installed Polkit rule grants passwordless access only to the root-owned helper, which accepts the three fixed fan profiles above.

Update or remove

omarchy plugin update benekuehn.macbook-fans
sudo ~/.config/omarchy/plugins/benekuehn.macbook-fans/setup-system
sudo ~/.config/omarchy/plugins/benekuehn.macbook-fans/teardown-system
omarchy plugin remove benekuehn.macbook-fans
