Sky Map is a well-crafted astronomy bar widget with clean, readable code and no signs of malicious behavior. Network access is limited to the Open-Meteo geocoding API, triggered only by explicit user search, and all subprocesses are bounded with proper timeouts and cleanup. The code includes defensive input validation and tests that verify security properties such as plain-text rendering of untrusted names and offline-first behavior.

  • Requires node on PATH, which is clearly documented in the README.
  • Makes a network request to Open-Meo geocoding API, but only when the user explicitly searches for a city.
  • Bundles a compiled Qt shader (MoonPhase.frag.qsb) which is not human-reviewable, but the source .frag is provided and matches the described functionality.
How this check works

This review combines the deterministic scan (the rule-based results above) with an independent look at the plugin's code by a language model. The model reads a trimmed sample of the repository's files, the manifest, and the README, then gives a plain-language risk level and a recommendation: install (no notable danger), review (look closer first), or avoid (clearly dangerous).

It runs on the same analyzed commit as the deterministic scan and is strictly advisory — it is not a security guarantee and never blocks a plugin by itself. A human moderator still reviews plugins before they are listed.

Sky Map

Sky Map is an Omarchy bar widget that shows the current positions of the Sun, Moon, and planets above a city you configure. Its panel can also show recognizable zodiacal and popular constellations, bright Messier objects, and the visible Milky Way band and galactic core.

Sky Map showing planets, constellation star figures, and configurable sky layers

Features

  • Search and persist a city without depending on the weather widget.
  • Track the visible Sun, Moon phase, and planets on a local-horizon compass.
  • Show 25 curated constellation figures with small dots at their source stars.
  • Keep constellation names hover-only or enable persistent labels.
  • Toggle the Solar System, constellations, Messier objects, and the Milky Way independently.

Install

omarchy plugin add https://github.com/EdwardCaf/sky-map.git --enable

Usage

Click the telescope icon in the bar to open or close Sky Map. Hover an object for its name, altitude, and azimuth, or hover a constellation line to reveal its name. Use the toggles to show the Solar System, constellations, persistent constellation labels, Messier objects, and the Milky Way. Constellations start hidden, and their labels default to hover-only. Press Escape to close the panel.

Configure

Search for a city in the Sky Map panel and select one of the suggested matches. The selected label and coordinates are stored in the widget's Omarchy settings and the search field then collapses into the location label. Use the pencil button beside that label to choose another city. Search results come from Open-Meteo through a bounded, short-lived process. Regular sky refreshes use the stored coordinates and require no network request.

Constellation figures use a curated subset of D3-Celestial's planetarium line convention. The lines are visual guides, not official IAU constellation boundaries.

Sky Map requires node to be available on PATH. Astronomy calculations use the bundled Astronomy Engine 2.1.19 source, so installation does not run npm or download packages.

Move the widget if needed:

omarchy bar move io.github.edwardcaf.sky-map --section center

Remove

omarchy plugin remove io.github.edwardcaf.sky-map

Shader asset

MoonPhase.frag.qsb is a compiled Qt shader and is committed because it is required at runtime. When changing MoonPhase.frag, regenerate it with Qt's qsb tool:

qsb -o MoonPhase.frag.qsb MoonPhase.frag

Validate

omarchy plugin validate .
qmllint -I "$OMARCHY_PATH/shell" BarWidget.qml Panel.qml
node --test sky.test.mjs
node sky.mjs "London, England, United Kingdom" 51.5 -0.12
