French Dictionnary

by Jerome Maeder

Read the Portail lexical in the Omarchy bar: seven dictionaries — TLFi, Wiktionnaire, Littré, three Académie editions, Moyen Français — plus etymology, synonyms, antonyms, collocations, proverbs, concordance, translations, morphology, word family and a century of usage frequency. 87 268 words searchable offline.

The plugin is a well-engineered French dictionary bar widget that fetches from a single allowlisted host (www.cnrtl.fr) using bounded, argv-based curl commands with no shell, no redirects, and strict input validation. Offline search is the default, and all file reads/writes are confined to its own state directory with path-traversal protections. No obfuscation, persistence, or destructive behavior was found.

How this check works

This review combines the deterministic scan (the rule-based results above) with an independent look at the plugin's code by a language model. The model reads a trimmed sample of the repository's files, the manifest, and the README, then gives a plain-language risk level and a recommendation: install (no notable danger), review (look closer first), or avoid (clearly dangerous).

It runs on the same analyzed commit as the deterministic scan and is strictly advisory — it is not a security guarantee and never blocks a plugin by itself. A human moderator still reviews plugins before they are listed.

AI advisory only — automated analysis, not a security guarantee.

French Dictionnary

ATILF's Portail lexical in the Omarchy bar: seven dictionaries on any French word, its etymology, its synonyms, the company it keeps, and a century of how often it was written.

Left alone it is a book in the bar. Click it and it becomes a full panel.

Highlights

  • Twelve tabs, the portal's own. Morphologie, Lexicographie, Étymologie, Synonymie, Antonymie, Voisinages, Proverbes, Proxémie, Concordance, Traductions, Famille de mots, Historique — in the portal's order, under its names, showing only the ones the word actually has.
  • Seven dictionaries inside Lexicographie: the Trésor de la Langue Française, the Wiktionnaire, the Littré, three editions of the Académie française from 1762 onwards, and the Dictionnaire du Moyen Français.
  • 87 268 words, searchable offline. The index ships with the plugin, so search answers as you type, and what you type never leaves the machine unless you opt into the portal's own search.
  • One request per word. Everything the tabs show comes out of a single call, so switching tabs costs nothing and a word already read works with the network down.
  • Follow the language. Cross-references are links, any other word opens on a double-click, synonyms and neighbours are one click each, and Alt + ← → walks back and forward through what you have read.
  • Readable from the keyboard. A long article scrolls with ↑ ↓ and the page keys; Ctrl + ← → moves between tabs and Ctrl + ↑ ↓ between words — without ever taking the search box away from you.
  • Keep the words you want back. Ctrl + D or the ☆ stars an entry; Favoris and Récents sit at the top right with their counts, each scrolling in its own box, forgettable one row at a time or all at once.
  • Set the way the portal sets it. Paragraph structure, quotation rules, small-caps authors, tinted definitions and domains — transcribed from the site's own stylesheet and drawn in the current Omarchy theme.
  • One host, no shell, no tracking. Every request goes to www.cnrtl.fr and nowhere else, built as an argv array, bounded in time and in bytes.

Install

omarchy plugin add https://github.com/jmaeder/omarchy-frenchdict-cnrtl.git --enable

--enable asks where to put it in the bar. To place it yourself:

omarchy plugin enable jmaeder.frenchdict-cnrtl right

Needs Omarchy 4 (Quattro) with shell plugin support, curl, and a Nerd Font for the book icon — a stock install has all three.

Controls

Settings

In ~/.config/omarchy/shell.json, on the plugin's entry:

Key Default Meaning
maxCachedEntries 300 Entries kept on disk, 20–5000. One entry holds every tab for a word, typically 30–60 KB
showExamples true The dated quotations inside articles. Off leaves the definitions alone
highlightObjects true Tints definitions and technical domains, as the portal does, in the current accent
onlineSearch false Off, search runs only against the bundled index. On, a query the index cannot match is sent to the portal
frBadge true Marks the book in the bar with a readable FR in its lower-left corner

Data and privacy

Everything on screen is Portail lexical data, from www.cnrtl.fr and no other host — the list is enforced in code and redirects are not followed. Word search runs against the bundled index, so what you type is never part of a request, unless you turn onlineSearch on. Nothing the portal sends is rendered as it arrived: the markup is parsed into a closed set of known constructs and re-emitted. The plugin writes one directory, its own state under ~/.local/state/omarchy/plugins/jmaeder.frenchdict-cnrtl/.

The dictionaries, the corpora and the analyses behind every tab are the work of ATILF (CNRS / Université de Lorraine) and of the laboratories named in docs/data-sources.md. This plugin only displays them and adds none of its own. The portal's terms of use apply to its content; read it as you would read the site, and do not point this at the service in bulk.
